The Eatons Hill Project was a Major Intersection Upgrade to provide access to the Largest Hotel in Australia. The Final Intersection layout provided six through lanes and 2 turning lanes. The works were undertaken while conveying 20,000 vehicles per day safely through the site. The upgrade was to the Department of Main Roads specifications and inspections were carried out by DTMR Development Control.
McIlwain Civil provided community liaison services in the form of leaflet drops, VMS boards and discussing traffic plans with the local businesses. A member of the McIlwain Civil project delivery team was an RPEQ and has Level 3 Main Roads Traffic Management Accreditation. Therefore all of the Traffic Guidance Schemes and Traffic Switching Layouts were designed in house. An advantage of this system was that the team could provide a quick response to changing work operations and traffic conditions.
A 400mm Deep Lift asphalt pavement with a 150mm CMB working platform was provided over the majority of the intersection. A challenging aspect of the project was how to provide a deep lift pavement in the centre of the existing intersection and still maintain traffic access to Bunya Park Drive and adjoining commercial properties. A 2m profiler was successfully utilised to ‘mill’ down 450mm and this area was ‘filled’ with asphalt over a two night period.
