McIlwain Civil was subcontracted by Watpac in November 2009 to deliver the Civil Works associated with the Gold Coast Stadium Upgrade project at Carrara. The works included Bulk Earthworks, Drainage and Services Infrastructure, Pavements and External Road Upgrades.

The works involved excavation, treatment and removal of approximately 50,000m3 of acid sulphate soils and the construction of heavy duty crane and piling platforms. Services infrastructure included stormwater drainage, sewer and water. All works were constructed within a major building site which required significant coordination between all trades to ensure the project deadlines could be met.

The works also included upgrades to Nerang– Broadbeach Road including intersection upgrades, bus bay, U-Turn facilities and Taxi Rank all constructed to DTMR standards. These works required expert traffic management and planning to minimise impact to traffic.   The Head Contractor relied heavily on the expertise of McIlwain Civil in this regard to ensure works were completed to the satisfaction of the DTMR inspectors.

The non-negotiable finish date dictated by the first AFL match to be played on the new ground meant McIlwain Civil were required to provide significant resources to fast track the completion of the project.

McIlwain Civil used a partnering approach with the principal contractor to ensure the achievement of project milestones in accordance with the Head Contract. McIlwain Civil’s Project Team developed excellent relationships with all stakeholders.
